Why a Price Table Is the Wrong Starting Point

Comparisons between countries usually open with two columns of numbers. This article does not, for a straightforward reason: a price that is not itemised cannot be compared with another price that is not itemised, and quoted ranges go out of date quickly.

What can be compared honestly is what each quote includes, what happens if something goes wrong, and who looks after you afterwards.

Compare the Scope, Not the Total

Ask both providers for the same breakdown: the implant, the abutment, the crown or bridge, any temporary prosthesis, any additional surgery such as grafting or a sinus lift, imaging, and follow-up appointments.

A figure that covers the implant only, against one that covers implant and crown, will look like a large difference and may not be one. Our pricing guide sets out the items a quote needs to name.

Then add the costs that sit outside a treatment quote entirely: travel, accommodation, time off work, and a second trip if one is needed.

Compare the Timeline

Leeds Teaching Hospitals describes implant treatment as involving multiple appointments over a period of months and at least one surgical procedure. That is the same biology wherever it happens. The FDA notes healing of the implant body may take several months or longer, with a temporary abutment typically in place.

So the question is not whether treatment abroad is faster — the healing is not. The question is where you will be during those months, and who sees you in that time.

Compare the Follow-Up

This is where the real difference between options usually sits.

The FDA notes complications can occur soon after placement or much later, and that failure is usually defined as looseness or loss, which may require another surgical procedure. The EFP notes that peri-implant disease can progress faster than gum disease around natural teeth, is usually harder to treat, and that its early warning signs are not always easy to detect yourself — which is why regular professional review matters.

Before deciding, settle:

• who performs routine reviews once you are home, and at what interval

• what is covered if a component loosens or fails, and for how long

• whether a local dentist will service the system used — and get the brand and model recorded, as the FDA advises

What Does Not Differ by Country

Your own risk factors travel with you. The EFP lists the most common causes of implant failure as poor oral hygiene, a history of periodontitis and smoking. None of these changes with the location of treatment, and none can be offset by a lower price.

Equally, suitability is decided by examination, not by destination. If a clinician at home has said implants are not currently possible, the useful step is understanding why — bone, gum disease, medication, smoking — rather than assuming a different country will produce a different answer.

Is treatment abroad lower quality?

Quality is not a property of a country. It depends on the clinician, the assessment, the plan and the follow-up, which is why those are the things to compare.

Can I have it all done in one trip?

Some stages can be combined in selected cases, but healing cannot be compressed. Treat a single-trip promise made before examination with caution.

What if it fails after I get home?

Ask exactly that before booking, in writing: what is covered, for how long, and who pays for any return travel.

Should I get a second opinion?

Reasonable — and it may equally confirm the first. A second assessment is not a route to a preferred answer.
